A young adult encountered difficulties persuading the the Department of State that she herself had chosen to renounce her U.S. citizenship. US law charges US consular officials with ascertaining that such decisions are made freely, without undue influence from anyone else. We engaged directly with the State Department to identify the specific concerns holding up approval of the renunciation and then helped the client prepare for a second interview with a U.S. consular officer. Armed with a better understanding of the consul’s point of view, the client was able to persuade officials of her independence and intentions. The consul recommended approval of the renunciation, the Department of State concurred and issued a Certificate of Loss of Nationality.
