An individual who had completed the steps necessary to renounce his citizenship at a US consulate abroad had a change of heart a few years later and sought our assistance. Renunciations of US citizenship is a multi-step process that is not complete just because the first steps are taken. After investigating, we established that the individual’s Certificate of Loss of Nationality — the final confirmation — had never been processed by the Department of State. This meant that the renunciation of citizenship had not been completed. We then engaged directly with the consular section to present an application for a new U.S. passport. The consulate ultimately agreed and issued him a new U.S. passport.
